This Week is Zone 2: We're Tackling Our Book Collection

This year, I've decided that I need to get something in order around here--the mass of books that are spilling out of the cabinets and shelves everywhere in my home! I know I'm a bibliophile and everything, but it's pretty ridiculous. Therefore, the special project in Zone 2 this week is book decluttering. And speaking of books...

I've developed a healthy fear of our local librarian. I can't help it. Every week when we go in to check out books, she scans my card and immediately I get...THAT LOOK!

You know what I'm talking about (unless, of course, you never have overdue books and if that's the case, then can you please come over this week and help me with my zone?). That LOOK is when they stare at the computer screen, furrow their brow, and mutter, "oh, my!"

It never fails.

I'm scared that one day they're going to frisk me and search the car, holding my kids as ransom while I go home and find the lost books.

Well, this week is Zone 2--the living areas of your home, like the living room, the den, the play room, and such. If you're new to Zoning your home, go here. Make sure you get those nooks and crannies, and all those chores you keep putting off.

Now, what to do with all those books?

Pack up all those books you can pass along and either donate them to your local charity, sell them at a used book store, or send them to my library with a note asking if they would accept the donation as a partial payment on the Keeley Family's overdue fines.

Each member of my family is a bookaholic, so we have tons of books and are always moving them around to choose another one or dusting/vacuuming the dust, etc. My hardest part here is convincing the kids that their favorite ones that are torn up and broken need to get tossed, especially since you can no longer find all the parts to read it all. Any suggestions?

Favorite books are treasures. I would keep them and maybe try repairing them with clear packing tape. If you can't read them at all, then save the most special books (maybe 2-3) as keepsakes and trash the rest.
