Windows is SERIOUSLY screwed up!

Oct 25 2010

There we were watching football on a Sunday night when a commercial came on that absolutely made my skin crawl! Windows was advertising software you could use to edit photos. It was a mom trying to get her holiday picture right, one where every child was looking at the camera and smiling. It seemed impossible until she went to her computer and began editing the photos.

Hooray! A family photo that is picture perfect! Every kid is smiling at the camera in their matching shirts.

She then turns to the camera and says, "Windows gives me the family nature never could."

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

As you can imagine, I was livid. This is the exact message that moms are bombarded with constantly..our families, our homes, our husbands, our lives--none of it is good enough. We need everything perfect!

It's like we're telling God that He screwed up. "Sorry, God, but you evidently didn't know what you were doing when you gave me these children. Thank goodness Windows software is around to save the day."

Please, aren't we tired of that message by now? We are perfectly imperfect, just like our children, our husbands, and our homes.

We live in a world where everything is an image--an airbrushed, edited, made up image. Let's go against the grain and be real for a change! Windows, sorry. You are not God. And God shines best through cracked pots--imperfect people just like me!

By the way, I'm so glad I use a mac.

So, what do you think about the ad? I want to know.

Talk About It!

I hadn't thought about the commercial in that way, but you are right! I thought it was silly because I actually LIKE the screwy photos with everyone being the way they normally are. A few years ago, I was taking a photo of my kids for a Christmas card and they were goofing around. I ended up using one of those shots for the card and working it into a "naughty or nice" theme. It was great.

AMEN!! I've only seen this commercial once, but it offended me as well. Your blog sums it up very nicely.

I especially disliked how the family hung their heads in shame for not being perfect. I must admit I would like to have one pic of my whole family looking in the same direction and smiling but I think they are awesome and precious just the way they are, goofy and full of energy.

I am so glad you women feel the same way. We are constantly bombarded with messages like these every day. One friend brought up the fact that the mom says, "Finally, a picture I won't get ridiculed for.." Who is ridiculing her? Are these really the friends you want to share Christmas with? Friends who would ridicule you for your imperfection? With friends like these, who needs enemies? And let's not forget that there is NO CONDEMNATION for us (or ridicule or that matter)--Check out Romans 8:1.

I hate this ad too, but mainly because it glorifies mom at the expense of the dad. Denigrating fathers is the fad, I guess.

I thought it was awful, too! Why not have a picture that shows who you really are? We have our family portrait above our fireplace. My toddler has his finger in his nose. We love it!
