This Week's Giveaway: The Enlightened Mom

Jun 05 2011

Full

I know what you're thinking.

When I heard the title, "The Enlightened Mom," I'm immediately thinking incense, chanting, and my yoga teacher in college who always started pitting-out twenty minutes into class.

Oh, you weren't thinking about my yoga teacher? Okay, so I guess that was just me...

But, anyway, I started checking out Terri's book, and was overjoyed to find out she was a Christian! Yep, that's right, an "enlightened" Christian. Who would have thought, right?

Terri offers some outstanding insight on how to truly put things in the proper perspective and let God's light shine through your life. So many times we allow things like unforgiveness, anger, bitterness, and discontent cloud our vision and prevent us from seeing the beauty of what we are doing as moms. Terri's wisdom helps us lighten our loads so we can let God do miraculous things through our lives.

I'm giving away a copy of "The Enlightened Mom" this week. Just leave a comment to share some tips on how you lighten your stress load as a mom and you'll be entered to win!

And make sure you listen in to the interview that I did with Terri. She even leads listeners along in a meditation! (incense not required!)

I try hard not to let the little things bother me - it's tough because I love a clean house, BUT I love my family being comfortable in my house more!

During the summer months I hire a teen from my church to come one day a week to play with my kids so that I can get some major projects done. It lightens my load and also helps a local girl earn money to go to camp, a retreat or even pay her cell phone bill :) Plus, my kids get to hang out with someone more "cool" than mom!

I've found that if the "load" seems too overwhelming that is my clue to walk away and play with my children. I feel energized and content and gain the perspective to whittle away one project at a time-- and I do it more quickly too!

I am fortunate to have next door neighbors who help me a lot! My husband works second shift, so it is hard, but with them around it makes my life easier!

I lighten my load by reminding myself that it doesn't all have to be done today. If I make a little progress, and spend time each day in prayer, play, and work, then I have had a balanced day.

If I win this book I will give it to my daughter Lisa. Her husband left her after 17 years; she has 5 children with the oldest 17. She works part time and just finished her master's degree in special education. She lightens her stress load by taking her kids and going on hikes. Last week it was a 7 miler. She also does service for anyone who needs help, like taking in meals, baby-sitting, etc. She attends church regularly and is very active in a leadership capacity for the women's group. She cooks big meals for her 4 boys and 1 girl. This fall she'll start working full-fime, since her baby is now 6; she will teach special ed. She loves children who need extra care and is very patient with them.

I take a yoga class once a week. I really want to get there more often, but I haven't been able to make that happen. That one hour does so much to relax & refresh me. Its a start!

I say a little prayer when I'm starting to feel stressed and ask God to remind me of my priorities.

One of the most effective ways I have learned to control stress is by doing Laughter Yoga, both by myself and with my 11 year old daughter. Laughter yoga is enormously helpful in diffusing stress and increasing positive emotion.

I was feeling drained and worn out, wondering how in the world I was supposed to juggle kids, husband, house, and work. Then it dawned on me that I had to choose myself first. In doing that, all the rest gets taken care of. When I choose myself first, by taking care of me, everything else falls into place. The 'things to do' don't go away, but all of a sudden they all seem more manageable!

HI Hannah,
This is the first time I read ur blog and I did like it. I have a 2 year old son so its a new experience as everyday I see my son growing there is a mom in me who is growing too!
I am from India, but since my husband got a posting in Australia. I took a break from my career and shifted to this new continent, with a small baby with me, with a total new role of complete homemaker... Life had drastic changes from place, to friends, to weather, to different role!!! Same was my son going through at that very yound age... amidst of this so many bombarded changes on both of us... we have grown up much stronger... I wonder at this young age how he has learnt to manage people, express feelings, talk a language completely and understand 2 other languages too!!!
His tantrum time, is the testing time and off late I have understood the reason behind it and i am able to manage with the start of hug, kisses and Love u statements and then being the kid with him. Best tactic is just enacting his mimic in a smiling face changes his tantrum to laughing playful time in moments.

In our language there is a proverb which I am translating here and it goes like this 'God can not be everywhere, so he created mothers'!!!
Its so true, our nature and character is what will set our family's tone and together it sets a tribe's and so is nation and of world!!!

Much love and care to all the moms here
God bless u all

Bye
Nuthan

In order to lighten my stress as a mom I enroll my family to help me.We have a 10 minutes clean up time everyday of the week and 30 minutes on Sunday. For each day that we forget doing that ,I add 10 more minutes to the weekend clean up.We make it fun by listening to music!

To lighten my stress load, I try to take very good care of myself physically by eating well. The better I eat, nutritionally, the better I feel, and the better I feel, the better mom and wife I am. So glad to have found Terri, and now Hannah. It's wonderful to have online contact with moms who are walking the same road I am.
