This Week's Giveaway: Joy Bauer's Food Cures

Dec 09 2011

Full

I was mailed a copy of Joy Bauer's new book on Food Cures, and I was amazed at the size of this sucker! My husband picked it up and exclaimed, "This thing is like a textbook!" And, basically, it is!

If you ever wanted to locate any nutritional cures for common ailments, it's here. You can look up the condition, and immediately find the food that can help your situation. The one reason I love this book is because it is one of those resource items you can keep in your health library. Another reason is because I firmly believe that God has already created every cure for our every ailment. Food can be our worst enemy or our greatest ally. It all depends on how you treat it!

This week, I'm giving away a copy of this book to one of my readers. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment sharing your favorite food cure. One of my favorite food cures is oatmeal raisin cookies. During all of my pregnancies, I had really low iron. What saved me was having an oatmeal raisin cookie and chasing it with orange juice. The vitamin C in the orange juice helped the iron in the oats and the raisins absorb more efficiently into my bloodstream. Hooray for food!

Garlic is my favorite food cure. Garlic oil for ear infections, garlic "tea" for head colds, you name it, garlic works for everything!

During my last pregnancy I developed gestational diabetes and found that by eating cottage cheese before going to bed my blood sugar would stablilize throughout the night. I was told it was because of the high protein content. It worked great for me!

Fennel. It is awesome for tummy aches! I have some fennel antacids that are safe for the kids. Anytime there is an upset tummy, I pull out "the tummy medicine". However, I've had it backfire... I've been asked if I have the tummy medicine prior to requesting dessert! Guess they've learned too much of a good thing isn't always a good thing!

I truly do think an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Minimal calories and yet they are very filling. There are so many varieties out there that it's easy to find one to please. And if you've waited too long to eat, the natural sugars hit the blood stream quickly. :)

We have found that lemon juice (of one or one half a lemon) sprinkled with Cayenne Pepper drunk at intervals throughout the day helps with a cough and break up congestion . Honey or honey mixed with lemon juice is also really good for a cough.

I have a garlic and onion soup recipe I make for colds. So soothing! Not too great for the breath, but you shouldn't be kissing anyone when you're sick anyway! :)

I'd have to agree and say garlic is my favorite cure. It's an antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, antispasmodic, anthelmintic, antiviral, etc... Garlic seems to have it all covered. When we feel a cold coming on or are in the midst of battling it we chop up garlic and swallow it with water. I made the mistake of taking in the morning on an empty stomach. Boy did that sting my stomach until I got something else in my tummy.

I love food! It's so hard to say no to sugar -- a major cancer feeder. I have CML and so I am looking for new ways to enjoy food and starve those cancer cells, while providing healthy choices for my husband and kids, too!

I just found out that red grapes are better for you than green ones, and I love grapes! So that's good news!

I'm really glad for all of the research that has been done on foods and their nutritional value.

Adding some lemon in your water is supposed to aid digestion, is supposed to stimulate the liver and kidneys, and so much more.

It also tastes delicious and looks pretty in the glass as well!

I love snacking on nuts for protein and energy, but Brazil nuts are one of my favorites for their high amounts of selenium. Selenium helps regulate thyroid function for those with a low-functioning thyroid which can cause fatigue, depression and weight gain.

Some people thing that nuts are fattening and cause weight gain, but this is a myth. As long as you're eating nuts that are raw and unsalted, they are an excellent source of the GOOD unsaturated fat which is good for your good (HDL) cholesterol.

This book looks terrific! I drink apple cider vinegar in water with honey and lemon
to keep colds away. I agree that garlic is a super health booster. I will take a small
slice and wipe my kids' ears when they have pain. We also gargle with salt water to help a sore throat. It is amazing how much food can boost our health! Thank you for telling us about this book. It looks like a great resource.

If I think I am starting to come down with something, I fix a salad roll up, which is a leaf of romaine lettuce, some cabbage, some kale and a carrot rolled up together. Usually that pushes me back over the edge into health Believe it or not, it's not bad, and the kids don't mind eating it! Thanks Hannah for your positive encouragement!

Cherries are wonderful for Rheumatoid Arthritis! Fresh ones or real cherry juice...not the "candied" kind. My doctor swears by them and I do notice a difference when I have about a cup a day I feel much better. It is nicer when they are in season though :)
