I clearly remember one beautiful, crisp spring day back in 1992. Blair and I had been invited over to a friend's house for dinner and he lived in one of the ritziest parts of town, in Atlanta, GA. Blair and I left our tiny little renter house and headed over. As we got closer to his house, I was awestruck by the grandeur of the homes. They were sprawling mansions everywhere. Each house we passed seemed to be more glorious than the last one. I just stared out the window, amazed at the show of wealth.
"How in the world do you get to this level?" I asked Blair.
"I have no idea. I guess you're just born into it." He replied.
Those words stung my soul and I carried them around for years and years after that. They kept on echoing in my head, "...you're just born into it." It seemed so unfair. Why couldn't I achieve that level of success? Why did I have to be limited just because I wasn't born into something?
I resolved myself to the idea that success and fortune were only for the lucky ones, the ones who were "born into it." I wasn't that person. I was the person who couldn't pay the bills and didn't want to answer the phone because it might be someone trying to collect money. I hated that reality, but it's what I lived with every single day.
Until I started getting my facts straight.
Although the Word of God should be our first source of help, it's usually our last resort. I finally turned to scripture to figure out what I was born into. Over and over in the Bible, it tells us about the abundance that we are born into. God created us for success and not for failure. He designed us to prosper and not to live in lack. The DNA of God Almighty Himself is within us. We are made in the image of the Great Creator Himself. If He can create a universe as magnificent as this, then surely we can create a life of magnificence for ourselves.
Deuteronomy 28: 12, 23 tell us that "The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom."
There's the kicker: The big word, "IF." If we pay attention to His commands and follow them...that's it. That's the trick. God laid out laws so that we will always rise to the top. True greatness is not something that you are born into, or that you just stumble upon out of luck. It is something you can design for yourself. It's within you even now.
You breathe greatness. It's hardwired into you. You've just learned to put your dreams on hold or quiet those voices that keep asking for more. The reason you desire more is because you were designed for more. Now, it's up to you to do what it takes to get there.
Very few people reach true success. I'm not just talking about money here. I'm talking about living a life that you absolutely love. The reason only a few reach it is because the vast majority settle for less. Greatness is not made up of your mountaintops. It's made up of the little steps that you keep taking to get there.
Blair and I have come a LONG way since that spring day back in 1992; and thank GOD we got our facts straight.
You WERE born into it! The question is this: are you going to do what you need to do to receive your inheritance?
