Millionaire Mom

Jun 25 2011

Full

I've always heard that if you want to get advice about how to manage money, don't ask a poor person. Ask a millionaire! Well, that's just what I did. I interviewed Dani Johnson, multi-millionaire mom and entrepreneur, on the ins and outs of making (and keeping) money. And if anyone knows, it's Dani. This woman grew up on welfare, was pregnant at 17, and broke and homeless at 21. But instead of sitting back and accepting her lot in life, she decided to take action. By the time she was 23, Dani was a millionaire. How did she do it? That's exactly what I wanted to know. Listen in on this workshop and hear Dani lay out "God's Ten Steps to Wealth." Trust me, you DO NOT want to miss this. And make sure you check out her website, too.

By the way, this week I'm not giving away a single book. Yep, you heard me right. Instead, I'm giving away TWO "Dani Success Bundles!" Each bundle contains two of Dani's books: "Spirt Driven Success" and "Grooming the Next Generation for Success." Her first book is about how to achieve financial success. But, honestly, these principles can apply to everything! I didn't read her book, I devoured it! Her second book that I'm giving away is about how to raise children who are competent, strong, and successful. And let me tell you something, mama. Dani knows her stuff! Go ahead and leave a comment below and share your best money management tip or "a-ha" moment and you'll be entered to win one of the Dani Bundles! And make sure you listen to that interview!

"Use it up, wear it out, make do or do without." When we decided we needed to cut credit cards out of our lives, my husband came across this quote. He liked it so much that he posted it in our kitchen in an obvious place. I thought it was so fitting that he scratched it onto a torn piece of scrap paper. Another one we like to say to each other is "Cash on the barrel!" That one's from Little House on the Praire. =)

Great interview, thank you so much to both of you ladies for taking the time to do this for all of us,this is such a blessing. I think my aha moment was when I realized I did not care what anyone else was buying, if their house was bigger, if their kiddos were in a bunch of programs we were not signed up for, I realized I am content with the way we are and with what we have, which having a healthy sweet family is worth more than a zillion dollars anyway so it just all came together in my head to have a savings for emergencies and alot of the other things we moms spend money on is just stuff.

Make a budget and stick to it. This does involve making many meals from scratch but they taste so much better and are so much cheaper and healthier for our families. These books look great!

Marrying my husband was the best thing I ever did!! He has such wisdom in the area of money management. I've gleaned a ton from him! Now we coupon together, shop together and plan our budget together. It's great having a partner in this!

My "a-ha" moment was when I was in the midst of the "5 Minute Mom" program! That was last summer and this summer we are over half way to our goal of being debt-free. We thought it would take three years, but we'll be there in less than a year! My best advice: create a BUDGET and do your best to stick to it. It takes a few months to get it "right" but you learn a lot about your spending habits along the way. Worth the time and effort, for sure!

My best tip: practice gratitude for what you have. Forget about the Jones.

My husband and I sat down and wrote out all of our finances. This helped out a lot because I was struggling trying to keep up with everything. I am still working on this. I'm sure the books have really great advice to help us all become financially free.

My mom (who grew up during the Depression) had a saying, "Keep your yearnings within your earnings." It has taken me 50 years to heed her wise words. I've just recently heard a catchy poem from that era also: "Use it up. Wear it out. Make it work. Or do without." This is helping me declutter our home and our lives.

Pay off your credit cards every month - if that means you don't get to use them, so be it, just don't owe on cards!

I'd have to say a zero based budget was key for us. Telling our money where to go and tithing, saving and when it's gone then it's gone! We have saved even more since we started this and have been able to pass on the blessing to others around us! Praise God it's is wonderful!!

Drown the money monster!! Instead of stopping for a pop/coffee/snack at the convience store - I grab my water bottle and a snack from home before I head out the door. Saves several dollars a week. And it is better for me!

We learned the hard way to live within our means. Now we do not have charge accts. or credit cards. We also drive older cars but don't have payments. It is so great to only have our "regular" monthly bills.

So I had an ah-ha moment about money this week, in the shower of course! I was thinking about things that my husband and I want to do with our money, and we've been discussing lots of them lately. Sometimes just thinking and talking about money gets emotional. I suddenly realized that money is just a tool to help us do things - like a socket wrench or a screwdriver - and it's ridiculous to get emotional about a tool. Tools help you do things, sometimes you need more tools than you have, or different ones than you have. But you don't get freaked out about not having the right tool at the right time. You just figure out how to get the tools you need to complete the task at hand. Remembering to staying cool about money, and addressing money issues from a rational, solution finding standpoint, rather than letting money issues become emotional triggers, was my ah-ha moment. I'd love to learn more great money management ideas from Dani's book too!

I refuse to have more than one credit card at all. I also refuse to use it for anything more than emergencies or travel, since these days you can't travel without one. This keeps my debt in check (being a mortgage and a credit card that's it). I also pay extra on both of my debt payments so that I am getting a little more paid than just interest.

It helps me be more aware of how I spend money when I remember that every thing I have belongs to God and that I am just a steward of all He has given me. Every need provides an opportunity of fellowship with Him and helps curb those impulse purchases!

My best money management tip is that I pay with cash. When the cash is gone, the money is gone. One other thing I have learned, when I get big bills (100.00 and 50.00) I spend the money slower then if I get the same amount in 20.00s.
