Kenna is Bringing Up the Rear
Mar 17 2010
Kenna is our little baby. And even when she's 21 years old, she'll be our little baby. That's just how it is with the youngest child. I'm the youngest of five, and I am still my daddy's baby. I tried to sit on his lap last time we were home visiting.
He said, "Good Lord, Hannah. They're feeding you well in Virginia."
That's his nice way of saying that I need to get my large and quite heavy bee-hind off of him.
But, Kenna will always be our little baby. And I'll let her sit on my lap as long as she wants to. Sometimes, when I'm lucky, she'll still let me rock her to sleep. Those are really good days--a thousand things to do, but nothing's more important than my baby in my arms.
The other day I was making dinner and she had been playing outside with Klara. She came to me and said, "Mama, I want to hold you." Ahh, music to my ears. I stopped making dinner and just picked her up and held her close. Immediately, the left thumb went in her mouth and her right hand went to my hair (She likes to twist my hair around her fingers when she's cuddling. I have the knots to prove it!). In just a few minutes, Kenna was beginning to nod off.
Fortunately, I had the camera close by. I took a picture because deep, down inside there was this nagging little voice telling me that these moments were winding down. I could probably count on my fingers how many more times I will be able to hold her and let her fall asleep in my arms. It could have even been the last. I sure hope not.
I sure do hope not.
