Calling all my homeschooling Mamas!

I've been homeschooling my kiddos for 13 years now and I love it! And anyone who is right there with me probably knows all about Sonlight and the awesome array of products they offer. I really cannot say enough good things about them. They've got entire curriculum packages, not to mention all the individual subjects. It makes homeschooling so much easier, which keeps me sane while teaching 7 kids! It just so happens that the great folks over at Sonlight have graciously given me a copy of their Mathtacular program to give away. It really makes understanding math fun (and let's face it, that can be pretty darn hard to do at times). So if you've got a little one just starting out (K - 2), Mathtacular is perfect for them! Just leave me a comment here about some of your tricks of the homeschooling trade and you'll be entered to win.

I use Sonlight as well. My trick is to try to be flexible and realize that not every day will be the same. Some days will be more productive than others. My first Science experiment didn't work which was rather funny. I got my daughter excited about the experiment for days. Then, I finally do it an it totally did the opposite of what it was supposed to! We just laughed and moved on. Its all about enjoying the experience, or what is the point?

I'm just getting started with homeschooling and I'm working hard to network with others in the area to help me out. My real trick is relying on this website and my girlfriends to point me in the right direction!! I can't wait to have more helpful tricks to share with others!!

I use Sonlight for Lang Arts and most of their History books. My trick is to have an overall goal for the year, but not ignore the day-to-day opportunities which may be more important than the pre-determined tasks. Pretty similar to many of the other posts here, it seems.

I have used Sonlight for 7 years now and we really enjoy it. Probably my biggest trick is to teach my kids that their attitude is very important. No matter their circumstances ( or how aggravating little brother is) they are in control of their attitude and their own happiness. School work is a fact of life and they WILL do it to the best of their abilities but it is their attitudes that make learning fun.

One of my best tricks is to teach my kids what I love and enjoy the most, and find a strong homeschooling co-op to fill in the subjects that I am weak in. The kids get the benefit of someone else being enthusiastic about subjects that secretly despise. :-)

I am new to homeschooling and have a child beginning kindergarten. I have found at this age keeping lessons from 10-12 minutes and alternating between subjects she finds fun or easy and those she finds more challenging works well. That way she always has something to look forward to and does not get bogged down in frustration with those subjects that challenge her.

I've been homeschooling MY kids for er...about 4 weeks now, so my top tip is...ummm...oh, i know! My top tip is to not stop enjoying my little ones, even tho I'm now also a taskmaster! My 4yo has started Sonlight's Kindergarten program and my 2yo is along for the ride (except when she's napping, when the ride can obviously go a lot faster!). My kids are hilarious, daydreamers, procrastinators, very very slow, and also very smart.. I don't want to ever quit laughing AT them (nicely) and WITH them. I am just so so so grateful I don't have to send my boy to school- I love spending the day with him. Oh--and the Sonlight curriculum gives me loads of ideas for activities, so we are a lot more constructive with our free time. Even my 2yo runs around giggling durings cience experiments, and oohing over rainbows and weather vanes and clouds.

This is my first year homeschooling my k5 and fourth grader. So....to say I have many tricks of the trade would be sooooo false!! However, I can without a doubt say the biggest "trick" I have learned is to be patient with myself and my kiddos through this process. I have not heard of Sonlight but as soon as I post this comment I will be going to check it out! Thank you!!!!

I'm considering using Sonlight with my son, age 4. He's already showing an avid interest in everything math and reading related. I use starfall.com a lot for alphabet and phonic, but really need something on his level for math. MathTacular would be awesome to have.
