Breaking some eggs at the Keeley House

Have you heart that old saying, "You gotta break some eggs to make a cake?" Well, we are certainly doing that around our home. You see, school begins in a couple of weeks and I'm busting my bee-hind trying to get all of our books in order. I've been homeschooling now for over twelve years, so we have LOTS of reading books here at the house. This project has been a long time coming, so I finally decided to organize every single one of our books by grade level.

Is it achievable? Yes!

Did I have any idea how hard it was when I got started? No Way!

Here's how I'm doing it:

First, I got thirteen clear storage boxes (one for every school year, K-12).

Second, I went through every single one of our books. If it was a school book, I color coded it with a green dot on the spine (fortunately, most of them already had a green dot from where I started doing this years ago).

Third, I wrote the school year that the book corresponds to on the green dot (e.g., "4" for fourth grade).

Fourth, I covered the green dot label with clear tape so it was secure.

Fifth, I put them all in the box that corresponds to that grade.

Wow! What a chore! There were so many books scattered all over the floor, you couldn't even see any carpet! But, good news! I finished every single book in my house over the weekend. It's pretty cool how when you set your mind to do something, nothing can stand in your way. It feels so good to know that I'm going into the new school year with all my books in order.

That was until Kyler found a pile of books under his bed....

Looks like I'm going to be breaking some more eggs. Anyone for cake?

Okay, mama. I put tape OVER the stickers. That prevents them from pulling them off. Also, you have to be vigilant in making them keep up with the books. Heaven knows, I've had my fair share of lost books. Heaven also knows that I've had my fair share of kids who had to pay for their own lost books with their own money. There are only three places for books--on the designated shelf, in the reading basket if it is their current reader, or in their hands. Hope this helps.
